Simply put - Money
Let’s say I am a pension fund with a long term buy and hold view on apple Apple.l - I only care about the longterm outlook for the company.
A hedge fund may think that there is going to be some short /medium term disruption and go short.
I lend them my shares for a fee. I am getting paid for being a utility to the short seller which will increase my overall return.
My view hasn’t changed. I still think the that the price is going up - a few hedge funds shorting has not changed MY view.

I don't think you're understanding how TA works goosey son. Sentiment in cryptos is secondary to TA. That's not my opinion it's the opinion of people that make a fortune trading this shit full time. I'm inclined to agree with them.

Vexed you can draw as many support & resistance lines as you like, but if Bitcoin crosses one of those lines momentarily and you decide to buy/sell there’s absolutely no guarantee it won’t whipsaw the other direction - because that breakout is driven by nothing apart from people following the crowd.
The volatility makes is lucrative and risky all at the same time. I’ve dabbled a little myself and done ok but probably more down to luck than anything.

The thing l don't understand is why anybody owning shares would agree to letting some hedge fund 'borrow' them, knowing when they get them back their value would have dropped considerably??

Without TA you don't have a good indicator of when to buy or sell. It's super important. It's also pretty useful for confirming a breakout is legitimate etc.

The trouble you get with stuff like this and blockchain currencies is that any moves are based entirely on sentiment and not at all on any sort of fundamentals. I suppose you’ve got a flip of a coin chance of winning.

I certainly know that pump & dump schemes and scams like cryptos aren't going to go away any time soon, Vexed son.
I agree with you about XRP though. Even crypto believers think it's doomed. That's probably why WallStreetBets is trying to pump it.
